1. Keep control of your dog at all times so no flexi leads or extendable leashes unless in a locked position. Remember just cause you think it is cute for Fido to be running 10 feet ahead of you, does not mean that the other dogs are going to like it. They may see it as a threat, or as prey. Either way, there may be a negative interaction. Also, the trails are narrow, others use the trail and there is nothing worse when you are a runner then having to play hopscotch over somebodies flexi or dog that wants to chomp on your foot. Plus even little 2 pound Fido can be scary to somebody who is afraid of dogs.
2. Do introductions properly and only with permission of the other owner. If you are unsure what to do, just ask myself or one of the regular group members...they would be happy to help. We have all kinds of dogs with all kinds of personalities. While you may think it is cute that fido approaches a strange dog and licks their face because "he just wants to say hi"...the other dog may not think it is cute. Just think...if you were sitting in the park minding your business would you want a stranger to jump into your lap and french kiss you? Because that is what Fido just did :). So initial greeting is always nose to butt and controlled. Again if your are unsure how to do this…ask or read this
3. Move over to the side of the trail for runners and walkers...they have just as much right to the trail as we have and may not like fido running at their legs, or having to play hopscotch over leashes
4. Always clean up after your dog. If you do not have a poop bag, ask another member This is a absolute must.
5. Remember to bring along a small donation. We have raised a pile of money for different charities from HC and Beagle Paws to guide dogs and SPCA and even Big Brothers Big Sisters. All in all we have now raised about $4000 plus for charities.
6. Have fun. The walks are a lot of fun for both you and your dogs. We have some amazing success stories on them and I am so very very proud of everybody. So relax. You will get lots of support from the group members. Even if your dog is being a jerk...many of our members have been there. If you need help, just ask or do as some of the regulars do (and you know who you are) "Ken get your butt back here and help out with my dog....he/she is being a jerk" (only it sometimes gets a little more colorful then that ) :)
