Pit Bulls, BSL and Fun Facts
In light of the recent discussion going on in the province regarding pit bulls after a pit bull viciously attacked and killed a tethered beagle (and let’s not kid ourselves, this attack was horrible), I thought I would create a section on this site to keep track of the information and as an area to post all the comings and goings so that everybody can see, even those not on Facebook.
Contained within, you will find copies of various media articles, worthwhile blogs and some fun facts that have been getting people’s attention.
Pit Bull Fun Fact: Day 1
In an effort to change the conversation regarding pit bulls, I firmly believe that fear needs to be replaced by fact. When people speak out of fear, they believe all the myths and pseudo science regarding pit bulls.
In an effort to do so, I will be posting one fun fact a day for the next while about pitties. Feel free to share.
Fun fact day one...
Many people believe that because pitties were used in dog fighting they possess a gene which makes them predisposed to aggression and a danger to the public.
Science does not back this up.
For example.
In 2009 the Missouri 500 was one of the largest dog fighting raids in the World. The ASPCA did some great work with these pit bulls and wasted no time in using this population for behavioral research, including measuring the aggression in puppies and juvenile dogs from champion female fighters.
They found these puppies were no more aggressive than puppies from litters of non-champion fighting bitches, both in testing them with fake, stuffed dogs, litter mates, and non-litter mates of similar age.
In a journal article published in 2008 in the journal of Applied Behaviour Science, the study found that the most aggressive dog breeds we're actually he dachshund, the chihuahua and the jack russell terrier
How silly is the fear people have regarding being killed by a pit bull?
Coconuts kill 150 people on the world every year and injure many more. You are 60 times more likely to be injured or killed by a coconut than by a pit bull.
